My undeerstanding of the leash law it that it only applies to "off" property. Anyway, at the time the law was passed there was a great deal of discussion here on the forum. Those messages are still there. At the time I stated the law was useless as passed in terms of protecting people from attacks. That is a little scary. Especially with the news report stating mutliple shots was fired. To relate an old story. Not long after we moved to the Pines I heard what sounded like rifle or handgun shots. I went to the door and looked out. In the street, on foot, was an OP police officer in crouched position, firing his handgun multiple times into the woods across the street. He then ran about 200 feet and began firing in the direction of a home. I figured there was some very bad guy on the loose. Turned out it was a wounded turkey vulture and the policeman was trying to put it out of its misery. I called Rod Murray, police chief at the time, and suggested chasing a wounded bird in a residential area and trying to kill it with a hand gun was not something an officer should be doing. He agreed. A pit bull coming at an officer is another thing altogether. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I pick up my mail next to a home with a couple of youngsters and I've seen their pit bull/s loose on the property. My undeerstanding of the leash law it that it only applies to "off" property. I'm wondering too why the state police were handling this and not the OP police. I've thought about that myself. Does Ocean Pines still have an Animal Control Officer? I beleive one officer retired and his replacement quit but I don't know if the position was filled again. Firing a revolver at a dog in a residential neighborhood isn't the safest thing in the word to do either, but the officer probably felt he had no other option. That is a little scary. Especially with the news report stating mutliple shots was fired. Norm |
