Linda, thanks for the post. Point taken.
However, my commentary is about how the Communications Committee was involved in the final decisions and recommendations over many years to throw $200,000.00 down a sewer. None of the people who campaigned for these signs is currently on the committee, and I can assure you that the signs would not have been the top priority for those who are. Given that is the case, perhaps the new Communications Committee could pass a motion/recommendation for board action to take down the three electronic signs already installed, get whatever dollars can be salvaged, and not purchase another two signs. The money is committed at this point, so I'm not sure what is achieved by your attack, other than to stir the pot. Disappooijting you achose to use the "stir the pot" accusation. :People who do not agree with my commentry have used that attck for over 20 years. It is what folks tend to say when they have no valid argument to my commentary. Meanwhile, the current committee will continue to encourage Ocean Pines to use the signs more strategically and to employ more effective communications methods. Strategically? What do you suggest? More effective communications methods? As I mentioned in my commentary, for $200,000.00 OPA could have a world-class, opt-in text message system. Cell use penetration is probably at 95% or more among association members. My view, and one many will not agree with - Committees are the tip of the spear when it comes to bureaucracy. Bureaucracies have to sit around and try to come up with something to do in order to justify their existence. The electronic signs were a perfect example. The useless Monkey surveys are another example, and those non-scientific results should never be used to justify action on any survey question. This nonesense with good neighbor awards presented at board meetings is the latest example. My neighbor said hello when we moved in - let's give the fellow an award. And don't get me started on the Strategic Planning Committee. If I hear one more reference to our "core values" And now back to our normal programming. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: As the current chair of the Communications Committee, I wish you had reached out before writing a lengthy screed condemning us for the sign situation. None of the people who campaigned for these signs is currently on the committee, and I can assure you that the signs would not have been the top priority for those who are. Now these current volunteers on the committee -- who serve quietly and try to do good work in our community despite some headwinds that make it challenging -- have been painted as advocating for a $200,000 "fiasco" that didn't originate with us and was championed largely by certain board members determined to make the signs happen. To suggest that the committee pushed the board to make this expense (rather than the reverse) is untrue and unfair. The money is committed at this point, so I'm not sure what is achieved by your attack, other than to stir the pot. Meanwhile, the current committee will continue to encourage Ocean Pines to use the signs more strategically and to employ more effective communications methods. Linda Yurche, |
