It's not a shortage of lifeguards but an unwillingness to pay
The above may be too simplistic. I hear OC is also very short of lifeguards. I also think the qualifications to be a lifeguard on the beach are much higher than to be a pool lifeguard. So, how much do you think OPA needs to pay to attract the needed lifeguards? And most importantly, are pool users willing to pay that increased cost to use the pools? |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I should specifiy I was agreeing more with his first statement: "It's not a shortage of lifeguards but an unwillingness to pay" I think that OPA should pay more to attract lifeguards as $14 an hour just isn't competitive. But that is just my opinion. And how you go about paying more, I don't know. Not my job to figure out. I would also agree with showing IDs to get the resident rate, especially if that is policy at the golf course. Never once have I had to show that at any of the pools, although some have said they had different experiences. |
