As things change, OPA must also change regarding costs of things. Pay rates might sound high, but the market rate is what it is and we must adjust to obtain the needed staff, for any amenity. Higher costs of staff means two things. It means we have to be paying a competitive rate to get the staff needed, and then that also means prices likely need to increase, since our costs have increased.
I had no problem with the non-resident versus resident rate not being that different, when we had amenities open and usable all season; however, now that we are faced with a staff shortage which will only be remedied by spending a lot more money, we need to increase prices. That should, at first, be attempted to be shouldered by non-residents. I don't think there is a danger to our tax status to charge a LOT more for non-residents versus the small overage now. We can and do charge way more for beach parking, why not for pool usage? Not to mention the ridiculousness of not even enforcing proving residency or renting, in any event, they should be requiring that proof or charging the higher rate. I think the higher rate should be at east twice as much. If less people come, then we can revisit charging more for residents who will be happier with less crowding. I mean what's the big deal about enforcing? If you forget your card, go home and get it or pay extra. How hard would it be to train people to enforce who are collecting payment? OPA has a responsibility to its members, and having the pools open in the summer is a huge amenity that we pay to have in general, and to use. It is wholly unacceptable to have any significant number of closed days at the pools. It makes the open ones even more crowded also. It's just bad management and wrong. |
