Nancy,
I too am spoiled by the convenience of many of the local launch sites especially Assateague, Assawoman Wildlife Area and most public boat ramps, and disappointed by other identified soft launch sites that have long hauls to the water, inadequate parking, no maintenance, bad design etc.. I think that there is some sort of urban legend about kayakers that we just "throw our boats in the water a jump in". I will try most places at least once...but for people that want to explore Ayers Creek and Trappe Creek area, the choices are the new launch site, the public ramp at South Point and a LONG paddle up the bay to the Creeks, or launching from Ayers Creek Adventures. Anne Arundel County is my home county and they went to great efforts to identify kayak launch areas, create a pretty as well as informative web site and brochure, however quite a few of the launch sites have desctriptions like "steep access to water" or The launching site is ¼ mile from parking lot . Do not launch from the shoreline, launch from the floating piers. ( another challenge). AA county info: Click Here I'm happy to have some PUBLIC access. So many water ways are blocked by private ownership of the shoreline. The water is public but the shoreline isn't. See you on the water! M/R |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I hope it's not wasted time and money and effort to make that Ayres Creek kayak launch a reality, but I can't imagine many people using it. Carrying or pulling a kayak uphill for more than 100 feet after hours of paddling will not be easy. And because many people kayak with a friend, they are used to having two people carry a kayak because they can be quite heavy. So it will be two trips down the 100-plus feet path to the water and then two trips hauling the kayaks back up after the kayak venture on the water. We are used to kayaking at Assateague where we only have to carry the kayaks for fewer than 10 feet. We pull them from the back of the pickup truck, carry them a few feet to the water and that's it. We will not be using the new launch site even once. |
