At the meeting it was reported that for year 2022-2023 and the first 6 months of this fiscal year, OPVFD will make contributions to their replacement reserve fund.
The issue of reserves in accounts of OPVFD has always puzzled me to some extent. Given that OPVPD never receives enough money from Worcester County or other sources to fully fund its operations, any money in the OPVFD reserves must be money from OPA assessment dollars. Why should OPA even give OPVFD reserve funds, as opposed to keeping any possible OPVFD reserve funds in OPA accounts? I was told, perhaps around 2010 or so, that OPVFD had more money in reserves than OPA. Here is an interesting factoid: As a part of the original 1975 Agreement and OPVFD bylaws, the "Community Manager" of Ocean Pines was the chief administration officer of OPVFD and responsible for the executive management of the Department. That was rescinded with the 1977 agreement. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: At the B&F Committee meeting today, they said that OPVFD would be at the 12/19 meeting to go over their budgets. Perhaps we will learn more about what they plan to do then. At the meeting it was reported that for year 2022-2023 and the first 6 months of this fiscal year, OPVFD will make contributions to their replacement reserve fund. Afterwards, the contributions will be made monthly to maximize interest received. OPVFD has 1.03 million in replacement reserves on their books. OPVFD reprioritized items on their reserve list for replacement. They decided to purchase a $50,000 motor for the pumper v. a whole new pumper. Ambulances, previously rebuilt, got a higher priority. All of this will be presented at budget time with an updated capital reserve list. |
