I think some creative solutions should be explored. A few ideas pay a retention bonus at the end of the season based upon hours worked. Pay anyone who refers a lifeguard candidate who works at least 30 days a referral bonus. However as Joe has pointed out this is a nationwide problem and is unlikely to be solved by pay alone. College students in particular are looking for more career internship opportunities . A bad month of weather can also have a negative impact on the overall pay for the job. While 30 or 40 years ago being a lifeguard at the shore may have been nirvana for many, like many other positions the nature of desirable work has changed. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: It's difficult for the pools to attract teenagers (and likely adults) when they can make a lot more in other places. Even with the lifeguard pay increase for this year, it's quite a bit less than kids are making between hourly pay/tips that they earn at restaurants. My 16 year old would be taking about a $4/hour pay cut to become a lifeguard. My first summer job 30 years ago paid $5/hour, and I thought I was rich. Times have certainly changed! |
