When somebody gave their phone number as MUlberry- 6 or ATwater-4 or TUxedo-9, you knew right where they were from. I still remember the phone number at our grocery store in Southwest Baltimore (Pigtown) when I started high school -- Mulberry 4850. It changed to Mulberry 5 4850 when 7 number calling started and then later area codes were added. Maybe area codes were around earlier but I can't recall. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: You had plenty of friends who worked at Sparrows Point, and each had an ugly old 'point car' to drive to work. Everybody else (it seemed) worked for GM on Broening Hwy., Western Electric, or National Brewery. The above was true for me. Now all those jobs are essentially gone. Watching cars on North Point Blvd. going past Don White's Chrysler/Plymouth (383ci Road Runners for $3,150) heading back into the city with many of them covered in red dust. As a result of Sparrows Point, for years Norris Ford on Merritt Blvd. sold the most cars in the Balto. metro area. |
