Should I be worried about pipes freezing? ..from David Ditch Hi David, Yes, you need to be careful. Are you going to leave the heat on or drain the pipes? You need to be sure to close all the little air vents around your foundation, cut off the outside water, and open the spigots. If you plan to leave the heat on just a bit, open all the doors under the sinks in the house or the pipes could freeze. It isn't a bad idea to leave your toilet tanks empty and shut off the water to them, just in case the power goes out. I saw a house in OP once that had gotten too cold, the water in the toilet tanks froze and they broke open. The water flowed for weeks until the owners came down and found it. Water was flowing down the steps from the second floor. Awful, awful, awful! We don't come often in the winter and have done these things and have not had a problem. Good luck! Nancy Weber |
