Joe, well put.
This type of "commentary" -- suggestively and without any factual underpinning denigrating the OPA Board without overtly naming the OPA Board -- has become emblematic of Ms. Clifford's approach to "journalism," "reporting," and "editorializing." This latest published commentary is in my view intended as aspersions directed at the OPA Board -- again without facts -- masquerading as some kind of broad commentary about HOA Boards in general. And it irresponsibly and sensationally makes claims that have no basis (and none stated in the piece), about "bullying," "cliques" that "drink together," "intimidation," "harassment," spreading of "rumors," "digging up dirt," keeping "secrets," etc. The current Board is comprised of thoughtful grown-ups who take their responsibilities seriously and act for the best interests of the association in a business-like way. I see this in all that they do, and in working closely with them. Folks can certainly have and voice disagreements and lodge criticism in regard to Board decisions and policies, that's everyone's right as an OPA member. But distorting reality like this, I guess for the purpose of gaining a few readers or manipulating public opinion, serves no one constructively. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hi Sherrie. I just read your latest editorial in ROC Edition, the one titled "The HOA Clique: When Loyalty to power breeds bullies." Your editorial calls out what you claim is "a tight knit inner circle of board members and their close friends." Your accusations are essentially that this "inner circle" group uses a barrage of "hateful Facebook posts" to mock, discredit, and shut down anyone who threatens the status quo. To quote your editorial: "And the message is crystal clear: Speak out and we'll come for you. Get involved and we'll dig up dirt or create it. Try to run for office and we'll make sure you regret it." You obviously know the individuals you accuse in your editorial, but not one individual or "hateful Facebook posts" location is referenced. Even if your general concerns have some basis in fact, the editorial is a terrible piece of journalism as it is nothing but innuendo. Such innuendo broad-brush paints the entire board and friends of board members as participants in some "HOA Clique" out to attack certain association members. Not good. ************* From the Internet: Fueling misinformation: Lack of transparency: Ethical concerns: Impact on credibility:
