I am no techie but a couple of thoughts struck me as we went through the 7 hour electric outage last evening. My first thought was "no big deal, stuff happens" and brought out our supplemental lighting and turned on the gas fireplace. What first surprised me was that, when attempting to make a cell phone call, we could not. Obviously with no electric wi-fi was down, but the bar graph for the Verizon cell signal strength on the phone toggled between 1 bar and sos which I believe means one can only make emergency calls. I am guessing that once the power went down, like us, many went to their cell phone to either call friends, play games, etc. but all that use at one time from what the news said was affecting 10,000 customers could not be handled by Verizons tower. If so I hope Chief Robinsons quest to add another tower is successful.
My second concern was after watching the news this morning which reported that 10,000 customers were affected by the outage. They had a photo of what caused it. It looked like a medium size dead tree that had fallen on a single power line strung on a telephone pole. It was still resting on the line. Probably not the same area but it reminded me of the power lines we see strung along Rt 50 adjacent to the woods that seem to be trimmed to prevent such an event. I would like to think that Choptank pays enough attention to be sure dead trees near their lines are cleared especially if one incident like this can put 10,000 customers in the dark with the added risk of losing cell phone coverage thru no fault of their own. |
