The islands do not give any protection to the yacht club marina.
I don't think that is a primary purpose. Birds will not nest on the islands as it is too open and nests get washed away in storms. Islands in the open water above the Route 50 bridge are nesting areas. The only benefit from this 10 million is going to go to the private gated community of Osprey Point. It looks like the primary protected area will be Pines Point Marina and the homes over in that area. Literally pouring that money into the river only to have it washed away in a big storm someday just makes absolutely no sense. The work will include dumping quite a bit of stone so it is not likely to be "washed away." Anyway, I think providing protection in that area, protection once provided by Jenkins Point, is a worthwhile project. I am not sure if the proposed project is the most efficient and economical way to do so. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I've got to agree with you on this one Joe. 10 million is a hell of a lot of money and it is one way or another coming out of our taxes be it at the OP, State or Federal level. I'm not against spending money, but what are the taxpayers getting for it? Mother nature is washing these islands away and with rising water levels in time the whole of Delmarva will be facing more flooding problems. Look at Tangier Island which is a community that is slowly getting washed away. Like Assateague rolling over into the bay, the decision has also been made that the cost of trying to stop mother nature in some some circumstances just can't be justified. The islands do not give any protection to the yacht club marina. The marina has floating docks is well protected from waves and the yacht club is well elevated. Birds will not nest on the islands as it is too open and nests get washed away in storms. They seek out soft shorelines to nest such as the whole other side of the St. Martins or the land along the shoreline extending from Osprey Point through all the wastewater plant land which is all a natural shoreline. The only benefit from this 10 million is going to go to the private gated community of Osprey Point. They will get their shoreline built up at taxpayer expense while the rest of the folks on the river or canals pay for their own shoreline maintenance and/or bulkheads either directly or through an added OP surcharge on their assessment. Osprey Point owns the land, they should bear the cost of doing the work on their shoreline. I'm not against environmental projects, but just think what we could do for 10 mil by way of walking trails, bike paths, parks and like enhancements that we could actually use. Literally pouring that money into the river only to have it washed away in a big storm someday just makes absolutely no sense. |
