From WMDT:
OCEAN CITY, Md -Planning to go swimming? Be on the lookout for jellyfish. These tentacled troublemakers have been seen in swarms across Delmarva beaches. Beachgoer James Burtz explained that he saw a jellyfish the size of a horseshoe crab. So why have there been so many sightings? Ocean City Beach Patrol Capt. Butch Arbin said the water conditions are to blame. He said, “This year, right now, the salinity is just perfect for the jellyfish. So what we are seeing is a lot of jellyfish making their way down here. People are being irritated by them and being stung, and we are responding to that.” Ocean City lifeguards have been equipped with “sting-kill wipes” that help alleviate the burn. Arbin says the most important thing is to make sure the sting is dried out by washing the area with fresh water. Frequent Ocean City visitor Isabel Reiman was thankful she knew these remedies after her jellyfish encounter yesterday. “We came out, and I felt this weird stinging on my inner thigh, and I was like, ‘Did I get stung?’ It was just a tiny little red spot at first, and then it quickly spread out and got more and more painful.” Despite the current bringing in jellyfish, it is not stopping beachgoers from getting in the water. Reiman, as a sting survivor, shares her advice, saying, “Be aware of your surroundings. Look before you step, sort of situation. Don’t be afraid. It didn’t hurt that bad, I promise.” |
