Tom sold the Independent to Gannett around 1999. I heard around $400,000 and he invested in OP homes. He had a five-year non-compete and then came out with the Progress in 2004. His primary residence for last five or more years was a condo in Arizona. I hear he actually became president of the condo association. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Tom and I were friends from the first day I met him. As time went on, I grew ever more impressed with his ability to write intelligently and manage the difficult task of running the paper itself. And then reinventing it when the original became part of the other "driveway newspaper"(the details of that transaction I can't remember). Tom was never afraid to take a position and defend it forcefully and coherently. He was certainly a supporter of me as I waded through OP and Worcester politics. And I needed all the help I could get. I was also happy to see him add coverage of Captain's Cove about the time I was trying to disentangle myself from some ill advised investments there. I'll miss our annual summer lunches at the YC. And I get a smile from the pictures of him just posted. Tom always looked like he had just stepped out of the pool which was often the case. He and his bicycle always looked like refugees from the '50's. I'll miss him. |
