Why the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department Needs a Decontamination Station:
I’ve researched why the OPVFD requires an on-site decontamination station. This topic came up briefly at the Town Hall, but the hazards our first responders face extend far beyond COVID. As a fiscally conservative candidate, I focus on needs over wants and a decon station is no pet project. It’s a critical necessity. The following analysis, informed by insights from my husband (PFAS expert with the Army Corp Engineers and a Consultant to the National Guard and my son (a PhD in Environmental Engineering specializing in pollutants), explains the risks and the lifesaving impact of proper decontamination. Health Risks from Fireground Contaminants and PFAS: What Makes PFAS and Other Contaminants So Hazardous: In addition, hundreds of other carcinogens generated on the fireground can off-gas or settle as dust in the station. This complex mixture of chemicals increases the cumulative carcinogen burden for firefighters, who already face dangerous conditions on every call. The Critical Role of a Firehouse Decontamination Station: Health and Operational Benefits of a Decon Station: Firefighters already confront life-threatening hazards on the fireground. Their own gear and station facilities shouldn’t add to that toll. Installing a decontamination station represents a crucial line of defense in preserving firefighter health and honoring their service. |
