![]() Image Below: Memorial Day 2024. Description: Ninety-eight-year-old World War II Purple Heart recipient and Marine veteran Morris Semiatin fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima in March of 1945. He was at the iconic flag-raising. The cost of the battle was staggering. The assault units of the corps—Marines and organic Navy personnel—sustained 24,053 casualties, by far the highest single-action losses in Marine Corps history. Of these, a total of 6,140 died.
