As it stands, the podcast is a totally subjective first-person account, based in large part on rumors and heresy, by someone with an axe to grind. It's compelling, but it's not journalism.
Correct. It's compelling, but it's not journalism. Nor does it have to be "journalism" as any one individual defines it. I do not believe the podcast producers made any claim as to whether it was journalism or not. Journalism falls into four broad categories—news journalism, investigative journalism, feature journalism, and opinion/analysis. These types then branch out into a variety of different niches, styles, and techniques, with specialties ranging from politics and crime to sports and entertainment. The podcast is essentially opinion, as you suggest. Tarr is certainly welcome to his opinions and he has a right to express them. What troubled me was the interviewers accepting everything Tarr said as gospel, and then based on that acceptance, declaring OPA needed more officers like Tarr. As for Tarr, he was obviously on a mission. I will leave it to readers to decide if his interview helped him or anyone else. In my view, the interview did more harm than good for this community, especially for those whom he called out in a negative manner - including two or more he said he considered friends. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: >My question is why wouldn’t you look into these claims if you are a journalist? Yes, absolutely a journalist should look into it -- but not publish the interview without having also interviewed or tried to interview everyone mentioned and anyone else who might corroborate or dispute Tarr's claims and suspicions. As it stands, the podcast is a totally subjective first-person account, based in large part on rumors and heresy, by someone with an axe to grind. It's compelling, but it's not journalism. |
