Another approach could be a court case to return to county-wide voting for commissioners with the election structure set up to give an equal chance for minority representation. There are several ways to do this approved by the courts. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The one sure way, and probably the only way, is by the vote. OP has to become a voting block capable of electing or defeating candidates for public office, especially defeating an incumbent, or holding the votes to approve or defeat referendums specific to Worcester County. Until such time that OP obtains such voting power or political strength, those in elected office will always look at OP as just a HOA and a revenue source. In real life OP has the clout of only one County Commissioner (when she is interested) and is perceived to be is a nobody. Yes, we can be a powerful voting block on State ballots, or when a county-wide item is on the ballot, but unfortunately when the County went to district voting we became powerless and we all know how the rest of the county perceives us. I don't think that they will ever abandon district voting. We are the second biggest revenue source in the County and the commissioners regard us as a cash cow and do not provide us with our fair share. Bennett Bozman told me that they built a multi million dollar Senior Center in Snow Hill that serves only about 35 people. He thought we should have asked for one in the northern end of the county. The Commissioners built a multi million dollar recreation center in Snow Hill. Does anyone know the population of Snow Hill?? It is not nearly as large as Ocean Pines. Yes, they say that "anyone can use the Rec Center in Snow Hill", but who is going to ride on the "highway of death" to go there? Especially with gas prices the way they are. I agree with Nancy and others that we need to get organized and do something. I have a suggestion, but I'm sure that everyone will think it is too radical. The only way to get the attention of the County Commissioners is thru the pocket book. Show them how important the revenue from Ocean Pines is to the operation of Worcester County. Everyone in Ocean Pines, and I mean EVERYONE, or it will not work, should refuse to pay their property taxes for 3 years. When their source of revenue dries up maybe the Commissioners will realize our value. I say 3 years because I think that according to the law, they cannot start legal proceedings or tax sales until you are three years in arrears. Of course, you will have to pay a late fee, but I hope it would be worth the sacrifice. I know this is a radical idea but it will get their attention. BUT, does the Ocean Pines community have the guts to carry out a proposal like this?? Are you serious about wanting your share of the tax revenues? Remember the Boston Tea Party !
