Two locals winners in OPVFD lotto
By Dolores E. Pike

The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department (OPVFD) held its first cash lotto drawing on Labor Day and the big winner, of $100,000, was drawn by Jimmy Englishman, son of OPVFD's Assistant Chief, Jamie Englishmen. The two lesser prizes of $50,000 and $20,000 were won by residents of Ocean Pines.

OPVFD President Jackie Carey placed the lottery cage containing approximately 2,000 tickets on the table set up in the South Pines fire station's parking lot.  Approximately 75 hopeful winners had gathered just prior to 5 p.m., including one who had scurried up to purchase a ticket five minutes before the drawing was scheduled to begin.

"We appreciate your support" said Mrs. Carey, inviting everyone to see the newly arrived red fire engine that was parked outside.

Just as Mrs. Carey was about to step up to the table to oversee the drawing, the alarm went off with the dispatcher reporting an auto accident with injuries.  Mrs. Carey and all OPVFD personnel on duty quickly dispersed to the ambulance and fire truck and left with sirens screaming.

Long time volunteer fireman and ambulance driver, Steve Rosen, stepped up to the lotto cage and took charge of the drawing, selecting three children from among the assembled adults to each draw one winning ticket.

Following the drawing and commenting that the lotto gives the OPVFD "some extra spending money," Mr. Rosen disappeared into the fire station to make three important telephone calls that unquestionably were very well received.

The winning ticket numbers were:

1st prize of $100,000 - #1278

2nd prize of $50,000 - #1261

3rd prize of $20,000 - #774
